about

Mark Harris’ debut album Old Time Guitar is a bold re-imagining of the guitar’s place in old time music. Moving beyond the chordal backup style of playing that is usually encountered in this context, Mark offers a melodic approach that deftly captures the atmospheric, syncopated grooves of traditional fiddle and banjo tunes. Over fifteen tracks, Harris presents solo guitar versions of a variety of old time tunes, ranging from the momentous to the meditative, from the homey to the haunting. These tunes are drawn from all around Appalachia, the South and the Midwest, using source recordings of legendary old time players like John Morgan Salyer, Nathan Frazier & Frank Patterson, Edden Hammons, Matokie Slaughter, Emmett Lundy, Sid Hemphill, and more. Also included are arrangements of a few tunes composed by modern masters, such as Benton Flippen, Garry Harrison, and Oscar ‘Red’ Wilson.
